DAP says it’s ridiculous for PKR to want Chinese-majority Stampin!

Chong Siew Chiang

THE Democratic Action Party (DAP) in Sarawak has declared war.

War on its so-called partner in the coalition of (in)convenience known as Pakatan Rakyat (PR) that is.

War on Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

DAP state vice-chairman Chong Siew Chiang has said that PKR has no right to stake its claim over a Chinese-majority seat!

Hah! So much for trying to paint itself as a party for all Sarawakians by trying to venture into Dayak-majority seats!

The senior Chong is clearly showing DAP’s true colours of being a party that is only interested in Chinese votes.

Wanting to stand in Dayak-majority seats is obviously just a PR (as in Public Relations) move and an attempt to satiate its greed for power.

Because we all know there are only a limited number of Chinese-majority seats in multicultural Sarawak!

Chong senior is pointing out that PKR cannot stake claim to the Stampin parliamentary seat because it is a Chinese-majority seat and really, only the DAP can stand in such seats (according to the DAP).

In fact, Chong senior has said that DAP will contest in Stampin whether or not PKR agrees.

Irrespective of how PKR feels about the matter, DAP has marked Stampin as its territory!

“By right, this seat is a non-issue because results from past elections have clearly indicated that the majority of the people there (Stampin) supported the DAP, whereas PKR even lost its deposit.

“All this must be considered so that we can make sensible decisions. But what is very disappointing is that after a series of meetings, this matter still could not be resolved,” Chong senior is quoted as saying.

Yes, seven months of official negotiations and guess what? Still no agreement. No agreement because DAP will not give way to PKR.

“Of course we will put our strongest candidates in the toughest seats as our purpose is to win. Winning one more seat means one more chance to go to Putrajaya,” he is also quoted as saying.

Ah, it all becomes clearer now.

All DAP wants is to get to Putrajaya. The party clearly does not care about working together with PKR. It just wants a seat in the corridors of power. That’s all that matters.

That’s why Chong senior said DAP also wants to contest in Mambong, but the party seemed more willing to discuss this Bidayuh seat with PKR.

Because while PKR has no right to contest in a Chinese-majority seat, DAP feels there is no issue for it to venture into a Dayak-majority one. Hmm …

Don’t you find it strange though that the DAP thinks it has the right to stand in Dayak-majority seats but PKR is not allowed to stand in Chinese-majority seats?

So just where is PKR allowed to stand then?

So much for being partners huh? So much for talk of democracy when DAP won’t even allow — yes as in give permission, because we all know DAP is the opposition top dog calling the shots — PKR to stand in Stampin.

Guess PR really is a coalition of (in)convenience!

But you have to give credit to Chong senior. While other DAP leaders are all busy pretending to care about the Dayak community, at least Chong senior is not being hypocritical about why DAP wants Stampin — it is a Chinese-majority seat.

Plain and simple.

The Borneo Post’s report:

State DAP veep: We want Stampin

By Johnson K Saai

KUCHING: The DAP will contest in Stampin in the coming 13th general election, irrespective of whether its coalition partner PKR gives way or not.

State DAP vice-chairman Chong Siew Chiang said it was “something ridiculous” for PKR to stake a claim over this predominantly-Chinese parliamentary constituency.

“By right, this seat is a non-issue because results from past elections have clearly indicated that the majority of the people there (Stampin) supported the DAP, whereas PKR even lost its deposit.

“All these must be considered so that we can make sensible decisions.

But what is very disappointing is that after a series of meetings, this matter still could not be resolved,” Chong told reporters at the installation of signboards of the newly-launched DAP Mambong branch in Siburan here yesterday.

Asked to comment on speculations that the DAP would move its Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen to Stampin and field political rookie Dr Tang Sie Hing in Bandar Kuching, Chong said such a possibility could not be ruled out.

“We don’t rule out such a possibility. Of course we will put our strongest candidates in the toughest seats as our purpose is to win. Winning one more seat means one more chance to go to Putrajaya.”

Chong said the DAP was even prepared to contest in Mambong if given the chance.

However, he admitted that the party was relatively new in that constituency so it was best to sit down with PKR to see who has the best chance to unseat the BN.

“Of course it is our hope that the DAP would be given the chance to represent PR in Mambong, but, whoever gets the seat will have our full support.”

He said in the event the seat was given to the DAP the party would field a Bidayuh candidate.

“Since it is a Bidayuh majority area, of course we will nominate a Bidayuh candidate. After all, DAP is a multiracial party.”

Among those present at the event yesterday were DAP elected representatives Violet Yong (Pending assemblywoman), Wong King Wei (Padungan) and Christina Chiew (Batu Kawah).
