More global recognition for Rainforest World Music Festival

THE Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) continues to gain international recognition, making it into world music magazine Songlines’ 25 of the Best International Festivals for the third consecutive year!

Why is this a big deal? Because the British magazine — launched in 1999 — is recommending that its readers attend our music festival! RWMF is listed along with other top world music festivals such as Chicago World Music Festival, USA; Fes Festival of Sacred Music, Morocco; and WOMADelaide, Australia.

The magazine covers music from traditional and popular to contemporary and fusion, featuring artistes from around the globe — yes it is genre specific but its the right genre for one of Asia’s top music festivals.

The only other Asian music festivals featured on the list are Jeonju International Sori Festival, South Korea and Jodhpur RIFF, India.

Songlines editorial team said: “Selection of the festival is based on the broad representation of the quality and scope of music festivals around the world: from city-based events to ones in remote locations such as the Rainforest World Music Festival in Sarawak and the Festival in the Desert in Mali”.

The Rainforest World Music Festival has really put Sarawak on the world map for the last 15 years.

It has also won the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Gold Awards 2006 and ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA) Excellence Award 2009.

Over 20,000 international and local festival-goers have enjoyed dazzling performances from across the globe through daytime music workshops and action-packed nightly shows in Santubong.

Every year the show brings so much life to the area and the resorts are booked months in advance.

In fact our Sarawakian festival has made such an impact that a state in Malaya has felt the need to copy us by having their own world music festival! And this State has engaged Sarawakians of course to help run it.

Well how does the saying go? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?

This year, the original RWMF will be held from July 13-15.

”The event has no doubt been a contributor of tourist arrivals to the state and as the organiser of the festival, we are pleased to note that this year tour operators from as far as Europe, Australia and Singapore are putting together packages to the festival and the destination,” said Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) CEO Dato Rashid Khan.

Great stuff! You can purchase promotional tickets online along with daily passes at a 50 per cent discount until April 30.
