I AM thrilled to learn that National Day celebrations will be on September 16 because August 31 falls at the end of the fasting month!
What a wonderful 48th birthday it will be for Malaysia!
For once September 16 will be given the recognition that it is due.
Forty-eight years ago, this nation known as Malaysia was formed by Sabah, Sarawak, Malaya and Singapore – the latter was kicked out in 1965.
It has taken 48 years, but we will finally be celebrating National Day on the actual day our nation was formed!
The only sad thing is that most of the announcements on the celebration will probably say that Malaysia is 54 years old or that this is our country’s 54th year of independence.
Some say it’s just a technicality. But surely it fails to recognise Sabah and Sarawak’s role in the formation of this nation.
Sarawak was an independent nation from July 22, 1963 to September 15, 1963.
However, the date that we hold dearest is September 16 because we came together to FORM Malaysia.
As our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has made it clear that he wishes to see 1Malaysia, let’s be sure to give due recognition to ALL of this nation’s EQUAL partners.
